Unfortunately this on-line guestbook can no longer live in a lawless cyberspace that has changed due to the tremendous negative spam, graffiti defacement and blatant disregard for someone elses property. Between September 2005 to April 2006- I manually removed 100+ bogus guestbook entries that were generated by bots' or manual entry from a small minority of on-line criminals. I like his first records best.Deuce is one of my favourites. After Calling Card my musical interest went elsewhere, but I kept playing Live in Europe now and again.I used to try to play the bass guitar and most of the songs are perfect for non gifted amateurs like me. Tatoo'd Lady I tried on the normal guitar but Rory's way of playing left me playing only the cords. The polularity in Holland decreased with the years and after playing in festivals and doing big shows he ended up in the smaller halls with less audience and less press coverage, the only things what you learned was that he drank more than was good for him. His passing away was kind of a shock for me as well. But it wasn't until later, when I heard the "1974 Irish Tour Album" that I realised just what a great live entertainer he was. I've had three copies of that double album since (wore the first two out) & the one that I've kept in mint condition has been cut to show that it was deleted from Polydor's catalogue. For some reason, Rory's albums always seemed to be in the second-hand record bins. I consider "Irish Tour" & "Live in Europe" to be the greatest live albums of the '70's. I was fortunate enough to see Rory back in 1990 (?) at the Enmore Theatre, Sydney & after that I went out & grabbed as much of his stuff as I could find. Again, I came across most of his recordings in second-hand bins. I couldn't believe it! As far as I was concerned, Rory was THE greatest Blues guitarist ever, yet, noone wanted to give him any credit - then again, his blistering lead solo from Mike Batt's Tarot Suite was the callsign music of Sydney's Triple M for many years. I'm SO glad to see that you guys are keeping Rory's name & the energy of his music alive. Hi,

Three of us grew up together from (11 years old) and are still mates 34 years later.

My mate Gary was first into Rory (via Taste) in '69 or '70 - I'll have to ask him. Groundhogs too. He's got a 10 year old boy that he named Rory. Gazza has got to be the original Rory freak. He's never considered anyone else as coming even close in all these years.

You think it was hard to get a Rory/Taste album in the USA in 1975 ? Try getting ANYTHING in Oz in '68 through the early 70s - even Zeppelin etc. We were damn lucky. The local 'Music Box' record store owner just happened to be hip enough to get 'em in.

Anyhow, I think your site's great. If only we had something like the internet in those days, eh?

Any idea how to get our hands on the Irish Tour movie? The only Rory film that we've ever found in Oz is the Live in Cork.

Best regards,

Tony (Guildford, New South Wales, Australia)

It was in Rapid City, South Dakota, and he was opening for the band Rush. I was in the front row touching his green suede shoes, while he was energizing the arena with his amazing guitar work. Gerry McAvoy (sp?)was frantically shaking his head back and forth with his awesome bass playing. Drummer snapped a stick during the show. The Rory Gallagher band stole the show. Rush was a yawner compared to Rory's performance. Back then, Alex Lifeson was my guitar hero. It was quite a shock to see Rory school him that night. And schooled by such a humble polite man. I had never heard of Rory Gallagher prior to that night, and being right next to him while he played, I could tell that he was nice, genuine, and appreciative man. I got to shake his hand twice that night. The next day I went out and bought "Jinx", and throughout the 80's accumulated his older albums, including Taste. By the mid 90's I was somewhat indifferent to the rock scene but I was at a friend's house, and just happened to be flipping though one of my friend's Rolling Stone magazines, when I came upon the small article advising of Rory's death. At the time I was in a roomful of people who knew nothing of Rory. I didn't say anything, but fought back tears, was melancholy for awhile, then rejoined the conversation. An example of the bullfrog blues, and having to laugh just to keep from cryin'. Just recently I ordered a VHS recording of Rory, and actually did shed tears while watching him play Messin' with the Kid. There really should be a movie made of his life, as the tragedy of a truly gifted man, with such a humble nature, great work ethic with respect to his craft, and brutal conviction to not selling out, when he had every opportunity, is a rare group of characteristics that the world would be better to see. I was lucky to have seen many of the great jazz players LIVE--Wes Montgomery,Grant Green, Kenny Burrell. Not to many ROCK players fascinated me---apart from Johnny Winter..and an Irishman from Cork who i found was GREATLY influenced by my idol Django Reinhardt. When I was about 17 i read in an interview by Rory Gallagher where he said he listened to EVERYBODY-ragtime players like Rev. Gary Davis. Blind Willie Mctell,..ancient bluesmen..as well as avant-garde saxophone players like Ornette Coleman with their roots in Eastern Music. Out of ALL the late 60s/70s guitar players, this modest gentleman KNEW his stuff. For me, this is the true meaning of being a MUSICIAN...a word that squandered cheaply on individuals who are very narrow minded musically. He influenced me, and probably thousands of others, to "dig up" these ancient records of truely obscure artists....VERY few guitar players really LISTEN, I mean LISTEN to obscure artists.....I was so impressed by his interview that i went to see him--at the "Greyhound Theatre", Croydon, a very small venue. When we walked in we found,to our amazement, this young, good looking chap sitting at the bar drinking with every one else!---This was 1972!---Where can you go to a venue and see Bowie or Bolan or even Clapton talking to the public before a concert? Said he was getting together with Lonnie Donegan--and spoke fondly of his idol Lonnie Johnson, the legendary black bluesman whom Donegan cloned his first name from---We shook his hand and soon after he proceeded to IGNITE the small stage like a molotov cocktail.---never before, and up to this day, have i seen someone do amazing things with just a Vox A.C.30, a peeling strat, a MartinD-35,and a harp.--NO GIMMICKS----do you hear me people--NO GIMMICKS!!! something that today, with all the pyrotechnic heavy metal posers who think they are GOD!!--And this man was SOOOOO HUMBLE that he almost blushed when you praised him!--he was what a true human being was meant to be, a person with a heart of gold--and that feeling came through when he played. Only a FEW, and I mean FEW artists had this heart of gold. Wes Montgomery was one, Kenny Burrell,--and Rory. They are the tyoe you could meet on the street, or in a supermarket, and they would stop whatever they were doing and show you how to play a certain piece.--You try asking that of TODAYS so-called rock heroes!--You'd have to show your greenbacks first! I'm proud to say I'd met one of the finest, politest people who stayed true to himself and his fans. Mike Himes USA 24.3.2002 0:56:32 PCwizisme@aol.com http:// I saw Rory 3 times in the late 70's and early 80's I must say he was one of the best especially in a medium sized bar. All the times I saw him he was second billed or guest and it always turned out to be a disaster for the other band. The first time he was the warm up band on the Foghat Fool for the City tour around 1976 I believe. I, as well as most of the people at Three Rivers Staduim in Pittsburgh for that matter, had never heard of him. Foghat put on a great show including their debute of their most famous songs including Slow Ride, however it was marred by the whole arena screaming for more Gallagher the whole way through it. After that show I knew I had to see him again. Around 1979 I caught him in Youngstown Ohio in a old theater turned into a bar called the Tomorrow Club. He was second billed again, playing warm up band for Rick Derringer on his All American Boy tour featuring his most famous tune Rock and Roll Hootchie Coo. Again disaster for Derringer. In those days the warm up band would play for 2 hours and the feature for usually 3 or more. Rory came out and played most of the tunes from his album The Story so Far which included Tattooed lady, Laundramat, Cradle Rock, and others, then a mid show 30 minute or so set of him playing solo accoustic. It was always killer. I put him up there with Richard Thompson on accustic. I doesn't matter what type of music you liked. The sound that he could get playing an accoustic was spellbinding and the crowd would fall totally silent every time. Not even so much as a cough or a lighter clicking would be heard. Another 45 minute or so set then he finished off with Bullfrog Blues which brought the house down. I had to laugh after he had gone and they were trying to set up for derringer the crowd just kept chanting and stomping "Gallagher" to the point where they came out on stage and told the people that " Rory has left the building and would not be comming back" just like thay did for Elvis (only this was 1/2 hour after Rory had left) lol But they kept on.......... Derringer came out to a pissed off crowd and played a quick warm up tune and saw the kaos and quickly switched into the most rockinist version of Rock and Roll Hootchie Coo I ever heard in my life, but each time they stopped the crowd kept yelling for Gallagher. They played another tune, I forget what it was but these guys were really working and playing for their life, but still at every break and during the playing the crowd kept chanting. Between the second and third song Derringer again told the crowd that Rory had left but he had talked to the owner of the club and he told them that at 2am he would lock the doors and they could play all night long if they wanted and keep the bar open......... if the crowd would just settle down. They started into Rock and Roll Hootchie Coo again for the third song, even more robust than before if you can believe it, these guys were playing for a purpose and really laying it down, But the crowd just wouldn't have it. Derringers roadies caught a few rushing the stage and tossed them back and then all hell broke loose. Derringer yelled into the mic " Fuck it, goodnight" threw his guitar on stage and walked off with the other band members, the lights came on and the owner came out on stage screaming at the people telling them what a bunch of "mother fucking morons" they were and "get the fuck out of my bar and never come back". I saw Rory one more time in the early 80's and it was the same. Call it onstage chrisma, kick ass rock or whatever but all the times I have seen him I was with a seasoned concert going crowd that had never heard of him before, and they could never get enough of him. I have all his records, but like Fleetwood Mac with Lindsay Buckingham and a few others, the studio and live albums are mere shadows and totally pale in comparison to the magic and quality of music you would have experienced having been there. I have not had the chance to yet, but look forward to checking out the posted clips. Hopefully there was some magic captured and the rest of the world can see just how great he really was. But then my father had these LP's that I'd like to hear, that he had got from a friend of his, whom had killed himself (so the wife gave it to my father)- but then finally I came to hear some of those LP's that looked exciting- and at first I didn't pick the Rory LP up!- but then I gave it try and put it on. And I liked it from the very moment. The song was Crest Of A Wave, and the LP is some bootleg kind of LP, just called "Rory Gallagher" (but it's not the album- it's a blend of his first 2 solo albums)... I didn't really knew that it was blues/rock- I just liked it. But I didn't really understand it, 'cause there were errors in the recordings of the LP- the second side wasn't Rory- it was somekind of Beatles like music!- their more soft music. But I shure love(d) that A side with Crest Of A Wave, Fall Apart, There's A Light.. and 2 more. Now I've got almost everything official with Rory and Taste, plus some LP's Now he's a GREAT inspiration to me (the biggest I guess), both as a musician and as of being "good"- and through his music I digged in to his inspirational sources- and now I LOVE everything like Big Bill Broonzy, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Willie Dixon (I play bass myself :O))- Robert Johnson, GERRY McAvoy!, Scrapper Blackwell and so on! Fortunately, I had older brothers with good musical taste (no pun intended). They had a copy of "Blueprint" which I played over and over. When Rory came to town, I jumped at the chance to see him. A group of about 8 of us saw him play at the Royal Oak Theatre (seats about 1,000). He put on a memorable show- one of the best live performances I've ever seen. When he slowed it down and performed "Out on the Western Plain" I had chills. During the encore, we went down to the front of the stage and Rory slapped our hands. It was awesome. Since that show, I bought up every Taste and Rory album I could get my hands on. I was lucky enough to see him once again in Detroit about 4 or 5 years later at Harpo's. Another great show. My future wife and I had table near the stage. Unfortunately, I couldn't see him the last time he was in Detroit at a club called Key West (1990? or so). At that time I was palying in a band in the Azores, and I remember vividly, when we got a vopy of the LP, we all fell in love with the songs and included 5 or 6 songs from the album in the reportoire that we used to play. I loved every song in that album, but my favorites were Brute Force and Ignorance, Shin Kicker and Fuel the Fire. In 1980 I emigrated to Canada and continued to listen to Rory, although it wasn't too easy to get a hold of his albums, particularly the earlier ones. Rory played in Ottawa in 1983, but i could not attend the show. That is one of my biggest regrets, as he never came back to play in Ottawa. I bought all of his live cd's to make up for this, and I should say that it really makes me wonder how exciting this guy must have been live. Absolutely the best. For the longest of times I was hooked on Robin Trower, but after listening to Rory, he became my favourite guitar player. Just the fluidity and diveristy of stiles that he incorporates in his playing set him above everyone else. I was delighted when Buddha records re=issued all of his records. I'm about to tell ya how I got into Rory and Ive got f****n goose bumps up me back recallin' those early days when I first 'eard him. I reckon it must 'av been around 78. I'd just started to listenin' to Hendrix, Clapton, Buchannan and the like and I was 14. Me mate mentioned 'im as I recall sayin' I was goin' down Cronulla to get an album. I searched thru "G" and came across PHOTO FINISH. I got 'em to whack it on and that was that. To this day, that easily rates as one of me top 3 albums. If not no.1. It's hard to explain how listenin' to him on that (and IRISH TOUR) affects me. Sort of like he became me best mate and when ever I needed some solice, for whatever reason, I'd chuck the headphones on, slowly turn the dial up to 10, and he'd be there, goin'off. Somehow sayin', hey son, everythings cool. F****n champion. I remember an early party me and me mates had when we first moved outa home. I'd put on Rory and Shadow Play was playin' and we were all pissed as farts and jumpin' round when I heard the most fuckin' hideous noise. A mate had fallen on the stereo and the needle just dug right in and totally f***ed it. Mate, I was shattered. That was early 80's and for 16 or 17 years, no matter how hard I tried to get another album, I never had any luck. I bought anything I could get my hands on. "TOP PRIORITY" "DEFENDER" "AGAINST THE GRAIN" "JINX" "EDGED IN BLUE" but they just didnt seem to take me where "FINISH" did. Although "TOUR" used to get pretty close. Then in 99, I was orderin' in a imported CD from, shit, there ya go, I cant remember of who, but I definitely remember askin' the guy what of Rory's he could get in. I recall 'im rallyin' off the usual ones when he mentioned "PHOTO". Here comes those bumps again. I'll never forget that arvo when I got home and slipped it in the stedge. I've had some f****n' highs in me life, some enhanced some not, but that arvo, fuck, I went to Mars. With him havin' passed on by that stage, well, it's really hard to put into words how I was feelin', but I've got this great feelin' , that maybe Dave, you know. Mate, I hope that some of the colourful adjectives I've used dont affend, but thats the only word I can think of that empasizes the musical passion the lad brought out in me. I took the guitar up round 88 and have jambed along with him ever since. Of course I could never keep up, but it was never for the want of tryin'. Now I've come across ya site, and I really want to thank ya for puttin' this together. I could never find anything on Rory as far as tab goes and you've filled that void. Finally now I might be able to nail some of those chromatic flurry's he rips off. Mate, I've got a great family, great mates, 'ad some great gals, and I tell ya now, fair dinkum, Rory's up there with 'em all. A true legend. As you wrote in your site, I dig the way he stayed true to 'imself. I'm 37 now, a tradesman, a lad, and I can feel the 'ol eyes startin' to swell with f****n' admiration toward 'im and the fact that I'm able to share me thoughts with a fellow Rory fan. It has never seased to blow me out, the way in which he could jump right off that vinyl and make me feel, well, F****n' Sensational. Dave, I really hope you get this as I'd dig to possibly 'av a yak with ya about Rory. Who knows, I dont know if your from Ireland, but I'm headed there one day. What better way to see the place than to get down to some serious crack, than with some fellow Rory mates. Anway mate, you take it easy and thanks heaps again for givin' me the opportunity to put down in words me thoughts on Rory. It's been great. Mainstream record stores didn't have anything, so I went to a used record store and picked up Photo Finish and Stage Struck. I listened to those albums all the time and continued to add to my Rory Collection. I didn't realize it at the time, but the Photo Finish album was autographed. Taste and Rory were something very, very special. His music still affects me the same today as it did all them years ago. I was lucky enough to see him perform live 5 times, once in Germany in 1974 and twice at the Appollo and the Freetrade Hall in Manchester in the 1970's. The Pub was called The Ardwick Green, I think, and it was right outside the Appollo theatre. Anyway, I went to the bar to order the drinks, the barman held my gaze and was just about to serve me, when up stands Rory (he was sat in the corner with the band and a few roadies) anyway, the barman went to serve Rory first but Rory insisted that he serve me first, I insisted that he serve Rory first, and so it went on, so the barman took it on himself to serve Rory first. A little while later two pints of lager came over and a thumbs up from Rory!!! well this made my day, when I got up to leave the pub, to get ready for the walk over the road to see him perform, I went over to him to shake his hand, I felt compelled to do this ( I dont usually intrude on anyones space) when I thrust my hand out rather awkwardly to thank him he stopped his conversation and rose to his feet to accept my hand, he asked me if I was going to see the show, and told me to have a good night. A teenager was sat on the edge of the stage all night because he had a broken leg, he was safely out off the way of the crowd who had spilled out of their seats down to the front of the stage. The young mans crutch was laid on the edge of the stage also. Later on in the concert Rory got him up, strapped the Fender over the young man, stood behind him and played with his arms around him. It brought the house down and I remember thinking that the lad would remember that night for the rest of his life. It seemed just to sum up Rory's attitude. He loved his audience so much. kenneth Netherlands 2.3.2003 2:20:18 ken-san@planet.nl http:// I,m a extremely fan of rory for many years and i,m very curious to your video,s john mangan USA 2.3.2003 21:27:5 mangandude@aol.com http:// hello saw rory in cleveland great talked to him and donalshows at the agora were photo finish recorded the empire concert clubgreat memories Tim Jenkins New Zealand 2.3.2003 22:53:46 http:// Hi Saw Rory live in 1975 and again much later (80s). Went backstage with two friends after the show for an autograph. Rory invited us in and opened a beer each for us all to drink. As I write this, I have Irih Tour '74 on the CD. My latest, greatest find was the DVD for IT '74 in the bargain bin at Media Play in St. Cloud , MN, USA for $ 9 USD. I can only hope that in the afterlife, I have a chance to meet with, and , hope beyond all hope, to play, with RORY GALLAGHER. We stopped in at a record store to look over some tunes for the ride back because we had no music stores in our area. I picked up an 8 track of Rory's Blueprint and instantly became a lifelong fan. I'm 48 now and I own all of the Taste releases, every Rory studio CD, and A slew of bootlegs, demos and promos. I also have quite a few personal pictures I have bought along with other Rory memorbilia. I think I have 6 different videos so I can see what I unfortunately never experienced, a live Rory show. Just to see his outlaw stance with that low slung strat and the look of confidence in his eyes is enough to make me act like a 20 year old rocker again!!!! Thanks Stephen I just want to add that having read some of the messages a lot of you appear to be guitarists, well I play the guitar but can only imagine what it must be like to play like a true musician like Rory. I am sure many of you are very good guitaists (far better than me) and its also a great compliment to Rory that his music carries on not only as recorded but played live by people. bernard tuyttens Belgium 14.3.2003 13:37:2 betuyttens@pandora.be http:// The Man was truly Great.
